From 1 June until 3 July 2011 the city of Arnhem was held under the spell of Amber, the personification of fashion and namesake of the fourth edition of Arnhem Mode Biennale. Through exhibitions, lectures, workshops, a shopping route and fashion shows, the wide audience got to know our muse in all her appearances. An enormous former factory housed the main exhibition. Set up as a sensory experience, internationally renowned fashion designers like Prada, Siki Im, Jil Sander and Damir Doma were given free reign to capture their vision on fashion in an installation. Many designers collaborated with architects, musicians or filmmakers to show all facets of fashion. Another highlight in the extensive programme was the exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art Arnhem, in which artists and researchers Joke Robaard and Giene Steenman researched the history behind several garments like the parka and the cape in a search for the meaning of ‘real’ fashion. Artist collective Suze May Sho put the inhabitants of Arnhem in the spotlight with a photo studio in which they were styled, coiffed and got their make up done to be photographed in front of an artist-made background of choice. You can still see the results in the online gallery on this site. On these pages you find reports and photos of the month-long event. The true gems are the contributions from our Amber Editors: an international team of dedicated bloggers. Each editor was responsible for all content regarding one participating designer. They didn’t take the easy road by just writing a biography. Spread over these pages you find columns, drawings, poems and love letters. The next edition of Arnhem Mode Biennale will take place in 2013.
