Carmen Freudenthal - Elle Verhagen

Symphony for fashion

24 June 18.30 hrs
Catwalkzaal De Steenfabriek

The unique ties between fashion and music will be rendered visible and audible during this special day-long programme. Guest curator Simon Guzylack has selected a quartet of exceptional bands. With their envelope-pushing sounds they have created a soundtrack for the more avant-garde designers participating in the ‘Welcome to the World of Happy Fashion’ exhibition. Each of these four bands has a remarkable performance style, with an emphasis on the creation of a romantic, fairytale atmosphere, a mood that dovetails seamlessly with the landscapes in De Steenfabriek.

Matteah Baim
Matteah Baim performs profoundly atmospheric music that might be termed New Age Grunge. She was born in Milwaukee in the American mid-west, and via San Francisco and Chicago she eventually ended up in New York, where she started the band ‘Metallic Falcons’ with Sierra Casday of CocoRosie. Her solo album ‘Death of the Sun’, which was released in April 2007, presents a musical world that, to use her own words, is ‘spaciously phrased and roughly edged’.

Au Revoir Simone
It’s technology, but nobody says it’s lacking in emotion... Au Revoir Simone which is made up of the New Yorkers heather d’Angelo, Erika Forster and Annie Hart, succeeds in creating a warm and organic sound with three keyboards and a drum computer: the simpler the means, the more complex the performance. After releasing the minialbum Verses of Comfort, Assurance and Salvation in 2006, Au Revoir Simone released The Bird of Music – the band’s debut album – on their own label in 2007. The film director David Lynch is one of their biggest fans.

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy, or Owen Pallett, has been writing music all his life: the soundtrack for a computer game (at the age of 12), three film soundtracks (by the age of 16) and two operas (by his 21st birthday). Having become bored with his computer and guitar, Pallett uses nothing more than a violin and a looping pedal for his ‘Final Fantasy’ productions. His two albums, ‘Has A Good Home’ and ‘He Poos Clouds’, are as magical as they are strange, and they have been noticed by music critics around the world.
Pallett lives and works in Toronto, Canada.

The Dirty Projectors
He was a student at Yale University but decided to quit, and has become one of the most exceptional singer/songwriters of today. Dave Longstreth, the brains behind The Dirty Projectors, has produced several albums since then, featuring his remarkable voice and unique arrangements. He pulls out all the stops to mould the contours
of his music: cellos, trumpets and gospel choirs. It is ingenious absurdity. Longstreht lives in Brooklyn, New York.
