British designer Gareth Pugh is also set to participate in the Arnhem Fashion Biennale. Clothing from his previous collections will be exhibited in the Steenfabriek for the duration of the biennale.
So far Pugh has presented only three collections, but he has already made a big impression on London's fashion scene. His designs are extraordinary, and therefore difficult to categorise.
Pugh combines a fairytale world with futuristic science fiction in his creations.
He combines a modernistic version of Alice in Wonderland with a cyber-freaky snapshot of the future. His choice of materials is telling: plastic, PVC, rubber and latex are sometimes disturbingly uncanny. It makes one wonder what Pugh's vision of the future actually is.
Pugh's shows employ grandiose architectural constructions with helium-filled balloons that provide the requisite humour and theatricality. Since he designs pure beauty and proclaims a visionary message, Pugh might more easily be classified among designers of applied art than among designers of ready-to-wear fashion.
