Open-air cinema

22, 23 June
Jonas Daniël Meijerplaats (next to Eusebius church)

During the weekend of 22 – 23 June, a two-day open-air film festival is being held in the cosy atmosphere of the square between Café Brasserie Dudok and the Eusebius Church.
Thanks to a unique collaboration between Arnhem Fashion Biennale, Arnhem City Council and the UEFA Under-21s Championship programme, Café Brasserie Dudok and
the Focus Filmtheater will be showing films on a big open-air screen on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 June. In Friday’s film, ‘Shaolin Soccer’, it is football that takes the star role, while on Saturday there is a dose of high fashion in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. Café Brasserie Dudok will be setting up a special terrace for the occasion, so that the audience can enjoy the films along with summertime snacks and drinks.

Shaolin soccer
22 June – 22.00 hrs

A group of monks from a Shaolin temple discover the best way to make use of their martial art skills: the Hong Kong Super Cup. Famous highlights from the history of football pale in comparison with the stunts of their team. They fly metres above the
pitch with ease, and move so swiftly that ten players appear in the opposition’s
penalty area simultaneously, long before a defender is to be seen. By any reasonable, traditional criteria, ‘Shaolin Soccer’ is a botch. The film is so hilarious and compellin because the director and lead actor Stephen Chow succeeds in undermining every
normal judgement with every new and bizarre scene or gag. Jackie Chan would be envious.
Director: Stephen Chow, Hong Kong 2001, 87 mins. With Vicki Zhao, Stephen Chow, Karen Mok and Cecilia Cheung

The devil wears Prada

Weisberger expurged all her frustrations about the impossible tasks she was given in writing, in the emiautobiographical ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. In the film version directed by David Frankel, film diva Meryl Streep steps into the shoes of the ‘boss from hell’ Miranda, editor-in-chief of a magazine that is called Runway in the film. She is elegant, cool and
haughty, but above all a dominant and intimidating pro.
