2 - 30 June
Start from Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem
‘Welcome to the World of Happy Fashion' is the main exhibition of the 2007 Arnhem Fashion Biennale. It represents more than 10,000 m2 of fashion-related experiences at three atmospheric venues.
The Arnhem Museum of Modern Art (MMKA) forms the gateway to the biennale's main exhibition ‘Welcome to the World of Happy Fashion'. In the midst of heavenly spheres, melodies from musical boxes tinkle through
scent-filled spaces, and somewhere along the way you discover a butterfly has alighted on your shoulder. Here you can admire creations by John Galliano, KIND, Maison Martin Margiela, Basso & Brooke, Rodarte, Sandra Backlund, Viktor & Rolf, and many other designers.
You leave the museum via the garden, following a winding path to the Rietveld Building, nerve centre of the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts. This is where you can experience everything that is hip and happening in the world of upcoming fashion talent: presentations by fashion design students from the Netherlands and abroad, video recordings of graduation shows from
an array of international fashion academies, and workshops led by designer Pascale Gatzen. There is also an exhibition about fashion and illustration with work by Jeanne
Detallante, Merel Boers, Dan Gonen and others. Students from the MA in Fashion, Design & Strategy course predict what awaits us in the video ‘The future of happiness'.
Boats will then ferry you across the Rhine to the beating heart of the Arnhem Fashion Biennale: the Steenfabriek. The lead role in this former brickworks complex is reserved for landscapes. Walking on mirrors, mattresses and washing powder and across little bridges you'll be immersed in the wonderful world of designers such as Bas Kosters, Cassette Playa, Shoplifter, ThreeAsFour, Lanin, Romain Kremer, Bernhard Willhelm, Cathy Pill, Henrik Vibskov, Gareth Pugh and Matthew Ames. Anne de Vries made a special selection of videos that provide extra background material for this exhibition.
We highly recommend the café/restaurant facilities in the Steenfabriek for lunch, drinks or dinner.
