Erzsi Pennings

‘Creepy images of a different world'

The artist Erzsi Pennings describes her objects created from intensively processed materials as ‘tools for the imagination'. A sympathetic leap of the imagination is certainly useful when, for instance, contemplating a strange doll's house - one that it is painted totally black. Phoenix is the title of a small sculpture shrouded in silk that betrays the contours of a deer-like creature, thanks to the way in which the fabric envelops the miniature figure. ‘What I make is a bit creepy and other-worldly,' admits Pennings when characterising her works of art, which are realised using traditional craft techniques.

Pennings (b. 1976) also makes sophisticated, highly wearable necklaces under the name ‘ERZSI'. Earlier this year she showcased ‘Painted', a collaborative project with Saskia van Drimmelen, at the W139 exhibition space in Amsterdam. Erzsi Pennings graduated from Amsterdam's Rietveld Academy in 2006.
