Capricious

‘A magazine that is in itself a piece of art'

Capricious is an international photographic journal for up-and-coming photographers. They are all given carte blanche by the editors: ‘We know no rules and don't like dictatorship,' points out Sophie Mörner.

In Capricious, non-commercial photographers are assigned several pages to ‘exhibit' one photo per page. The matt-finished pages are detachable. This design concept is a clear indication that Capricious, which is essentially devoid of text, is not just any old magazine; it is a periodical collection of autonomous works from which readers can curate a personal exhibition.

Mörner came up with the idea for Capricious while she was living in the Netherlands in 2003. In 2006, an exhibition under the same title was staged in the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam. The work presented was by rising stars from the magazine, such as Katja Mater, Marianne Vierø, Melanie Bonajo, Paulien Oltheten, Linda-Maria Birbeck and Sema Bekirovic.

Screen Capricious is the digital version of Capricious.
