Anouk Kruithof

‘Staged photos with a documentary basis'

Putting heavy topics into perspective with a certain ease, positivism and humour, is what photographer Anouk Kruithof aims at with her work. Kruithof worked together with Jaap Scheeren (they both studied at the St. Joost Academy of Art in Breda) on the project ‘Het Zwarte Gat/The Black Hole' for 18 months. This project incorporates photos of the cosmos, black holes in the literal sense and portraits of people who have spent time imprisoned in an isolation cell. ‘I work from an open-ended theme and imbue it with social engagement.'

The production of work that could be characterised as multifaceted, experimental and boundless is what is most dear to Kruithof (b. 1981). ‘If necessary I'll call in a special effects firm to achieve my objectives.'

She has realised commercial assignments for the fashion brand Vanilia, SNS Bank and magazines such as Carp, Dif and Hollands Diep. On graduating in 2003 she won the student's prize from the Photographers Association of the Netherlands. Kruithof and Scheeren were awarded the Unique Photography Prize for their ambitious ‘Het Zwarte Gat/The Black Hole' project.

This was followed by an exhibition of Kruithof's work at the FOAM centre for photography in Amsterdam in 2006.
