Anne de Vries

‘I love playing with clay and tinkering around with things, yet I'm a photographer'

The work of the fine artist/photographer and videomaker Anne de Vries is increasingly tending towards applied forms. ‘These days I can even apply my ideas in fashion photography.' As a photographer who stage-manages and likes to ‘fiddle' with materials, De Vries contrives highly convincing images. He identifies playfulness and humour - ‘but not in the sense of HAHAHA' - as the main features of his keenly photographed work.

Work by De Vries (b. 1977) has been published in BLEND lifestyle magazine and the Amsterdam Index, and he has produced projects commissioned by the Film Museum and the FOAM centre for photography in Amsterdam.

Before graduating in fine art from Amsterdam's Rietveld Academy in 2002, he participated in an exchange programme at the prestigious Cooper Union School of Art in New York. He subsequently collaborated on several projects with his former Rietveld Academy classmate, the photographer Melanie Bonajo.

As a guest curator for the 2007 Arnhem Fashion Biennale 2007, De Vries has selected fashion-related videos made by artists and designers that will be shown in the Steenfabriek. He also made publicity photos for the biennale.
