‘Communicating with designs'
Brigitte Hendrix (b. 1978) and Jolanda van den Broek (b. 1977) are ... and beyond.
They began working together after graduating from Amsterdam's Rietveld Academy in 2005. They describe their first joint collection as street and couture, epic, elegant, tough with an acute edge.
The starting point is their sharp observations, the ideas, which they then translate into a concept. The process that follows always varies. ‘You could compare it to a story that starts to write itself,' says Hendrix about their non-seasonal clothing for men and women.
The prints they design themselves are terribly important: ‘It's a second layer that you can use to tell a story.'
...and beyond's activities and portfolio of clients range from designing interior collections for the Indian label Jheel and designing and styling products for the HEMA department store to costume design.
For the 2006 group exhibition Fashion NL: The Next Generation at the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague they showed a life-size, knitted white horse. At the ‘Airworld' exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam they presented a wine-stained stewardess outfit.
